The Megavalanche de Saint-Paul will take place on November 22.
Against a backdrop of recession in the cycling trade and industry, alongside budget cuts affecting local authorities, the Regional Cycling Committee and UCC, the event’s creator and producer, have managed to keep this international mountain bike race—one of the highlights of the end-of-season calendar—alive with a new format that brings together several cost-saving measures.
For its 31st edition, the slopes of Maïdo will once again showcase their remarkable network of mountain bike trails, running all the way down to Moulin à Eau: a descent of nearly 2,000 metres.
The qualification day is being dropped in favour of local enduro events, whose results will determine riders’ positions on the starting lines.
The event’s partners remain committed to the Megavalanche and continue to support it: the City of Saint-Paul, the Regional Council, state services, the ONF (French National Forestry Office), the National Park, landowners, and volunteers from all the associations involved in the organisation.
At a time when mountain biking is firmly establishing itself as a driver of tourism and local economic activity, the question remains: why is La Réunion showing so little interest in taking concrete, forward-looking action in this area?
All lovers of riding and outdoor sport are invited to take part in the Indian Ocean’s biggest descent and enjoy the spirit of the passionate biking community.
